1. Project Instructions – Teach Claude About Your World
Think of this as your project's instruction manual.
Instead of repeatedly explaining:

writing style
coding standards
preferred formats
business terminology
goals
...you write them once in a Markdown file.
Claude automatically reads this file whenever you work inside that project.
Example
Instead of typing:
"You're helping me write a newsletter for business executives. Keep the tone practical, avoid hype, use tables where useful..."
every single day...
you simply store it once.
Now Claude already knows.

Think of it as: Long-term memory for one project.
One warning: keep it short. Overloaded instruction files get ignored. If it grows past a page, you're writing a manual, not instructions.
2. Slash Commands – One Click for Repetitive Tasks

Where do you actually do this?
This is the part most articles skip, and it's why half of readers give up in the first five minutes.
The features have different names depending on which Claude you're using.

You do not need to be a developer for any of this.
One thing worth knowing early: a skill saved only on your laptop won't run in the cloud. Scheduled tasks and Cowork sessions load the skills enabled on your account. This is the single most common reason someone's first automation quietly fails.
ChatGPT vs Claude
Many readers ask whether ChatGPT has the same capabilities.
The answer is yes. And the interesting part is how similar they've become.
ChatGPT now has real /plan and /goal commands, saved prompts that appear as /your-command, and it adopted the same open Skills standard Anthropic published. Around forty products now support that format.
Which means something genuinely useful: a Skill you write is increasingly portable. Write it once, and multiple tools can follow it.
Both companies landed on the same three ideas within months of each other:

A goal that persists across the conversation
Skills as plain markdown files
That convergence is the real story. This isn't one vendor's feature. It's where the whole category is going.
One thing to check: ChatGPT's agent mode was removed. It's been replaced by ChatGPT Work for multi-step tasks and finished deliverables. If you had something scheduled on agent mode, it may have quietly stopped running.
Before You Install Anything
You can download Skills other people wrote. Some are excellent.
But this is an early ecosystem, and it shows.
A February 2026 security audit of nearly 4,000 published Skills found 37% had at least one security issue, and 13% had critical problems including malware and hidden instructions. A separate audit flagged 341 Skills as outright malicious.
The good news is that the fix is easy, because a Skill is just a text file.
Read it before you install it.
It takes ninety seconds and anyone on your team can do it. If it's asking for things a one-page brief shouldn't need, don't install it.
This is the same rule you'd apply to any software your team brings in. It just feels less obvious because it's a markdown file.
Start Small
Don't build twenty Skills tomorrow.
Start with one of each.
✅ Write project instructions for your main project.
✅ Turn one thing you correct every week into a Skill.
✅ Connect one real data source — your drive, your inbox, your CRM.
That third one matters more than people expect. For most teams the bottleneck isn't how smart the model is. It's that it can't see any of their actual work.
You'll quickly notice something interesting:
The biggest productivity gain doesn't come from using AI more.
It comes from never having to explain yourself twice.
