🔄 AI Tools That Do More Than Chat (2-part series)

From building apps with a prompt to automating entire business workflows.

👋 Welcome

Specialized AI Tools Worth Knowing

AI tools are becoming much more specialized. Some turn meetings into actionable notes. Others search scientific research, create product images, or produce videos in multiple languages.

Part 1 of 2: AI tools worth knowing. Next week: more tools to explore.

1. Build an app without a development team

Lovable passed $500M ARR, with 80% of its users non-technical. Replit runs at $525M+ and is targeting $1B this year.

How to choose: Lovable for the fastest polished prototype. Replit when the app must run, scale and keep evolving. Bolt for quick experiments in the browser. Have a developer review anything that handles customer data or payments.

2. Meetings that write themselves

Granola reached a $1.5B valuation by not sending a bot into your calls. Plaud has shipped 2M+ pocket recorders for meetings that happen in person.

How to choose: For yourself, Granola. For a team that needs searchable call records, Fireflies or Fathom. To run better meetings, not just record them, Fellow. Face to face, Plaud. Whatever you pick, tell participants you are recording; under GDPR, transparency is expected.

3. Find and win customers

Clay passed an estimated $150M ARR, with existing enterprise customers more than doubling their spend year on year. Apollo is at about $150M ARR.

How to choose: Apollo to find people and reach them. Clay when good targeting needs research across many data sources. Gong once you have enough calls to learn from. Breeze if HubSpot is already your CRM.

4. Your time, tasks and inbox

Wispr Flow is valued at $2B after four straight quarters of 150%+ revenue growth. Grammarly, now part of Superhuman, has 40M daily users.

How to choose: Too many tasks and deadlines: Motion. Calendar chaos: Reclaim. Drowning in email: Superhuman. Typing all day: Wispr Flow. Working across languages: DeepL.

5. Research faster, and know where answers come from

Perplexity's ARR passed $750M with 100M+ monthly users. Genspark reached about $250M annualized revenue, and Glean hit $300M ARR.

How to choose: Ask where the truth lives. On the web: Perplexity or Genspark. In your own documents: NotebookLM. In research papers: Elicit or Consensus. Spread across company tools: Glean for many systems, Notion AI if your team already lives in Notion. Always click through to the source before you quote it.

6. Visuals, design and presentations

Canva ended 2025 at $4B ARR with 265M monthly users. Gamma passed 100M users. Photoroom is one of only seven apps ranked on all three of a16z's latest lists: web traffic, mobile users and consumer spending.

How to choose: Selling products online: Photoroom for the photos, then Canva for the ads. Decks: Gamma for speed, Canva for flexibility. For image generators, run the same brief through each and judge quality, consistency, editing effort and commercial-use terms.

7. Bonus: industry specialists to watch

  • Harvey (legal): $400M+ ARR and used by 100,000+ lawyers for drafting, research and contract review.

  • OpenEvidence (healthcare): used by about 40% of US physicians and free for verified clinicians.

The lesson travels well: in regulated work, specialists that cite sources and fit existing workflows are beating generic chatbots.

The takeaway

The best specialized AI tool is often the one that removes a recurring bottleneck.

If you spend hours searching for information, explore research tools. If meetings consume your day, test a meeting assistant. If your business needs better product visuals or multilingual content, investigate creative AI.

Choose one recurring task, test one tool, and measure the time saved. That's a better starting point than collecting subscriptions.
